Poem – A Poor Indian Farmer

This Poem Portrays the Struggles of a Indian Farmer and the state of farming in the country. Beautifully describes How difficult it is for any farmer to farm right from the seeding to the harvesting. Also it touches upon the typical Middlemen who use their buying power to humiliate and push those poor farmers to their end.

Seeded on a Holy day,
Borrowed on interest for weeding,
Begged at the sky, on the days of no rain,
Afraid on the days of non stop pouring,
Like a penance of a pregnancy,
Fasted and Prayed,
Harvested on a Holy day,
Dried and Sorted that off good quality,
Packed, loaded them On a cart,
Dreams of the payout shattered,
By the cruel Middle man’s estimate
Too low to survive for any farmer.!
The half naked, bare foot,
Skinny farmer in sorrow,
Sorted out his debts,
The payout was no more,
After debts and cart rent.!
A piece of cloth on his hip,
going to be his only asset forever.!
Cart-man out of pity on the farmer,
shared a little of his rent,
The farmer wonders,
Is this money for next year seeding .??
Or Stop farming and Move away ..???
